New Student Organization, People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation, Will Hold Meeting This Saturday.

Columbus, Ohio (March 31, 2023)- People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation, a recently-formed student organization, is holding a meeting this Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m.

A small group of students formed the organization in September 2022 to protest the traveling preachers that often come onto Ohio State’s campus to spread homophobic rhetoric. Since then, People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation has grown in size and attended peaceful protests and activist events in the Columbus area.

Communication leader, David Ambrose, who runs the Discord server for People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation, said the organization intends to “focus on bolstering inclusivity on campus while putting down bigotry on campus and around Columbus.”

The meetings outside of protests are informal, taking place bi-monthly at Thompson Library. Coordinator Bri Moccabee, a 4th year at Ohio State, is in charge of organizing meetings for the group.

Bri spoke about the upcoming meeting, saying the meeting would cover relevant dates in the month of April, such as World Autism Acceptance Day, and the fact that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Bri added, “We would also talk about any upcoming events surrounding social change such as protesting that would occur within two weeks and discuss plans of meeting and safety.”

In the past few years, social justice and activism-related groups sprung up around Ohio State’s campus—and many of them later disbanded. Bri believes People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation is different.

“When we proposed the idea to the student organization board we were told that it was unique and something they had never seen from any of the organizations they had met, but that it was something our community at OSU absolutely needed.”

Bri also said, “It’s a student organization that is willing to support anyone, tackle any social issues and provide community for anyone who wants to work towards humanity. We figured we would double as an activist organization and sort of support group, because as many activists realize, the things you are fighting for take a toll on you in some way or another.”

Hannah Seitz is the third leader of People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation. As the community leader, her role is to work as a moderator and facilitator for the group.

Hannah said, “[Our] overarching purpose is to provide a place and a community where everyone in any walk of life can feel supported and safe.”

Membership for People for Activism, Social Change and Liberation is free and open year-round.
